Teachers union votes to ratify agreement with Baltimore County Public Schools
THEY WANTED THE ORIGINAL THREE YEAR DEAL HONORED AND THEY FIND IT SO DISRESPECTFUL THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD RELEASED DETAILS TO THE PUBLIC BEFORE UNION MEMBERS GOT A CHANCE TO READ THEM. 11 NEWS HAS LEARNED THE TEACHER’S CONTRACT IS A DISAPPOINTMENT TO TAPCO UNION MEMBERS. OUR MEMBERS ARE GOING TO BE VERY ANGRY. PERSONALLY, I FIND IT TO BE A LITTLE BIT FRUSTRATING. THE TENTATIVE AGREEMENT, WHICH STILL HAS TO BE RATIFIED BY UNION MEMBERS, GIVES EDUCATORS AND STAFF A 1% COST OF LIVING INCREASE SEPTEMBER 20TH. THEN ON JANUARY 1ST, MOST MEMBERS WILL GET AN AVERAGE OF A 3.05 SALARY INCREASE FOR THAT FISCAL YEAR. UNION OFFICIALS SAY TO EASE THE PAIN OF NOT GETTING THE FULL 5% RAISE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT AGREEMENT, NEGOTIATORS AGREED TO A REMOTE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND MENTAL HEALTH DAY. IT WILL HAPPEN THE WEDNESDAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING. MENTAL HEALTH AND WORK LOAD ARE HUGE CONCERNS, SO WE WERE LOOKING FOR ITEMS THAT DID NOT COST THE SYSTEM ADDITIONAL MONEY. WHEN CONTRACT TALKS REACHED AN IMPASSE IN MAY, TAPCO MEMBERS ENGAGED IN WORK TO RULE DEMONSTRATIONS THAT SELECT SCHOOLS. LARGE NUMBERS ATTENDED A SCHOOL BOARD MEETING WEARING RED, MEMBERS WROTE THOUSANDS OF LETTERS TO THE COUNTY COUNCIL. UNION OFFICIALS TELL 11 NEWS. ONE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE OF THE TAPCO CONTRACT DISPUTE IS THAT FOR OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICT, UNIONS WERE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE A BETTER DEAL THAN THEIR TENTATIVE AGREEMENT. I DO THINK THAT IT IS GREAT THAT ALL OF THE UNIONS BENEFITED. WHAT I REALLY WISH IS THAT ALL OF THE UNIONS HAD STOOD WITH US. UNION OFFICIALS WILL BRIEF TEACHERS ON THE DETAILS TOMORROW. VOTING STARTS FRIDAY AND WILL LAST THROUGH TUESDAY. UNION OFFICIALS PREDICT THEY WILL VOTE IN FAVOR OF THE AGREEMENT. REPORTING F
