ORANGE COUNTY- Ruben Estrada created the Hudson Valley Fiesta Latina a decade ago to bring Hispanics together and introduce their culture to Mid-Hudson residents of all backgrounds.
Estrada, a proud Puerto Rican raised in East Harlem, has announced that the popular event will not be held this year. Instead, Estrada and the American Latino Coalition will focus their efforts on bringing a Latino Cultural Center to Orange County.
Funding the project could be daunting, but Estrada said he will explore potential county, state, and federal grants. The American Latino Coalition will host a fundraiser gala for the Cultural Center on Saturday, September 6th at Falkirk Estate and Country Club in Central Valley in place of the Fiesta Latina.
The gala will feature some of the same cultural events and activities as the Fiesta Latina.
Though our focus is shifting, the commitment to our mission remains vital,” said Estrada, President of the American Latino Coalition. “This gala will bring together Latino families, community leaders, and partners who are united by a shared commitment to cultural pride, American values, and the spirit of opportunity that has long defined our great nation.”
Estrada said that the Cultural Center would feature cultural events, dance classes, art exhibits, and Spanish as a second language classes. He said he has spoken with the Town of Wallkill about hosting the heritage center and hopes to discuss the proposal with County and State officials.
“It will be for everyone, not just Latinos,” Estrada said. “And why not have it right here in Orange County?”
