SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University has just added a new major to its course list, and now students here will have the opportunity to shape the future with groundbreaking research thanks to the new biochemistry and molecular biology major.
Demand
This was one of the most requested majors, according to Dean of SU’s Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology, Dr. Michael Scott. He said in a statement in part:
“Demand from employers in the region for students with expertise in biochemistry and molecular biology has continued to increase, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Because the faculty at SU has a long history of teaching excellence in these fields, the logical step to respond to these needs was to develop the new program.”
Design
The major is designed for students interested in careers in the life sciences, pharmaceutical research, genetic research, and biotech companies. Professor and chair of SU’s Chemistry Department Dr. Stephen Habay said, the program is flexible enough so students can add a minor, do an internship, or pursue other academic goals.
He also says Biochemistry and molecular biology are at the forefront of innovations in human health and disease treatment, pharmaceutical development, agricultural improvements, and the creation of sustainable energy solutions.
School officials these efforts will help ensure SU students can get their American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology certification and get in the field.
