This year’s state tests were a mixed bag for Louisiana students.

Math was a clear bright spot: The share of students in grades 3-8 who met state targets on the annual LEAP tests grew by 2 percentage points from last year, to 33%, and all grades except for fifth made gains. In science, the percentage of students reaching “mastery” or above, indicating they are ready to move to the next grade level, grew by 1 point, to 29%.
The picture in English was a bit less rosy: The mastery or above rate didn’t budge from last year, remaining at 43%. Students in grades 4 and 6 made improvements, but the other grades — 3, 5, 7 and 8 — all saw their rates dip slightly from last year.

| English II | 45% | -2 points |
| Algebra | 42% | +3 points |

Still, it’s worth noting: Small year-to-year fluctuations are less meaningful than longer-term trends, and in that regard Louisiana students are making steady progress. In grades 3-8, the 35% of students who hit state targets in English, math and science combined is 5 percentage points higher than in 2021. And in high school, the 35% mastery or above rate is 3 points above 2021.
Another caveat: This year, the state introduced a new social studies test for grades 3-8 and a new civics test for high schoolers. Because the tests are new, state officials said the results won’t be available until a later date.
