In Boerne, the city government’s long-term planning is usually focused its rapid population growth. But city leaders are also looking for ways to boost Boerne’s arts scene and highlight its cultural heritage.
A research firm hired by the city has laid out a five-year plan aimed at doing just that.
The proposal from Phoenix-based Keen Independent Research suggests city officials focus on public art initiatives, with a goal of improving and preserving Boerne’s downtown — Main Street in particular.
The city will formally present Keen’s findings over Zoom on Thursday at 6 p.m., but a draft version of its documents are available online. The city paid the firm about $25,000 for its work, Boerne spokesperson Chris Shadrock said.
The research firm spoke with more than 250 residents, coming to the conclusion that Boerne’s culture is “refined while also being rooted in its heritage and the landscape of the Hill Country,” according to its presentation.
According to Keen’s research, the vast majority of residents interviewed said they want “more art and culture,” including murals, theaters or museums. Most residents interviewed said they want the effort to focus on Boerne’s artists and history.
Keen recommended Boerne create a “city-wide signage program” commemorating its heritage and topics that reflect Boerne’s culture. Some of those topics are: noting Boerne’s German heritage and its “role as a refuge for German intellectuals,” the history of the city’s population of indigenous people and the city’s role as a “refuge for urban dwellers,” according to the report.
The firm recommended Boerne develop a “Public Art Master Plan,” with a mission of funding and caring for any public art ventures. Keen suggested restructuring existing taxes, like the city’s hotel occupancy tax, and directing some of those funds toward arts and culture. The firm recommended the city create an arts and cultural administrator position.
Keen Independent Research will accept feedback from residents on the plan through Sept. 27. To weigh in, residents can call (602) 767-7067, visit the firm’s website or email boerneartsandculture@keenindependent.com.
