Players’ Ring Theatre to host a free, one-night-only, book release event

PORTSMOUTH – The Players’ Ring Theatre, 105 Marcy St., Portsmouth, will host a free, one-night-only, book release event on June 18, at 6 p.m., celebrating “A Light From the Nether,” the chilling debut novel from local author Molly Dowd Sullivan.

Set against the backdrop of coastal New England, “A Light From the Nether” weaves together body horror, psychic infection, and ghostly echoes of the Victorian past — all while unraveling a murder mystery and a tragic queer love story that refuses to be buried.

Blending eerie atmosphere with emotionally raw storytelling, the novel pulls readers into a phantasmic world where memory, grief, and longing twist in unexpected ways.

The June 18 event will feature live music, refreshments, a reading of the novel’s Prologue by the author and some of the Seacoast’s finest actors, and the opportunity to purchase signed copies. Admission is free, but RSVPs are requested to ensure seating.

“A Light From the Nether” is published by Wendelton Press and is currently available for physical and digital pre-order wherever books are sold. If you purchase a copy directly from the author’s website (mollydowdsullivan.com), you can pick it up at the event and get a free bookmark for your support.

RSVP requested at mollydowdsullivan.com.

The Dance Hall announces new Resident Artist program

KITTERY, Maine – The Dance Hall announced the launch of its first-ever Resident Artist program starting in July 2025. The first cohort of up to four, emerging and/or established artists across artistic disciplines– from musicians to dancers to actors—who are at a transformational point in their careers will call The Dance Hall their artistic home starting in July and running through Dec 2025.

According to Artistic Director Eric Klaxton, who made the announcement at The Dance Hall’s recent Open House, Resident Artists will receive a range of resources customized to their needs, such as: development, rehearsal, and performance space; production support; and opportunities for group and individualized mentorship and growth. Klaxton shared that with the massive challenges facing artists and arts organizations that support them, now is the time to step up and show up for storytellers in all disciplines. The launch of The Dance Hall’s Resident Artist program is the organization’s direct response to threatening realities like reduction and elimination of arts funding; loss of space for artistic creation, collaboration, and inspiration; and lack of growth opportunity and mentorship through deprioritized administrative support.

To learn more about The Dance Hall and/or The Dance Hall’s Resident Artist program, visit thedancehallkittery.org.
