China’s 2025 national college entrance exam, known as the gaokao, commenced on June 7, with 13.35 million students participating. In Beijing, the exam will run from June 7 to 10 in Beijing, and 78,900 candidates have registered, with 18 examination areas and 114 test centers across the city, according to chinanews.com.

At the examination site of the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China, candidates entered in an orderly manner. A designated candidate passage and an intelligent security gate were set up at the school gate. Traffic police were present to manage nearby traffic, ensuring the examination proceeded safely and smoothly.

“Candidates must pass three ‘gates’ from the school gate to the examination room, and intelligent security inspection equipment escorts the whole process,” Gao Xinqiao, Party chief of the Beijing No.19 Middle School told the Beijing Daily.

Gao explained that candidates first undergo identity verification via face recognition equipment. After entering the waiting area and storing their belongings, they proceed to an intelligent security inspection gate. Before entering the examination room, they must also pass the hand-held security inspection instrument of the invigilator to enter the examination room, according to the report.

On the morning of June 7, outside the gate of Shixi Middle School in Jing’an district in Shanghai, parents donned traditional qipao dress in various colors came to see off the examinees, symbolizing “winning at the first battle”. Some held sunflowers, hoping that their children would “achieve success in one fell swoop”.

Some teachers, dressed in red uniforms, stood energetically at the school gate to cheer for the examinees. They high-fived the students, offered encouraging words, and helped alleviate their nervousness. Under the organization of on-site staff, the examinees queued up in an orderly manner to enter the examination rooms, creating a well-organized scene.

Traffic police were stationed around the school gate, ensuring smooth traffic and creating a quiet environment for examinees to attend the exam.

According to China’s Ministry of Education, 13.35 million students have registered for this year’s national college entrance exam, the gaokao.

As the country prepares for this pivotal examination, comprehensive and meticulous “exam protection measures” have been implemented nationwide, reflecting the society’s strong support for high school graduates to pursue their dreams.

The ministry noted that special considerations have been made for disadvantaged groups. Braille test papers have been prepared for 16 blind candidates, and reasonable measures have been taken to facilitate the participation of over 14,000 examinees with disabilities. Additionally, students have access to targeted psychological guidance to ensure they receive necessary support, according to Xinhua.

To uphold fairness, various regions have introduced advanced technologies.

CCTV News reports that East China’s Jiangxi Province will deploy an AI-powered, real-time surveillance system for all 567,100 candidates. Utilizing deep learning algorithms, the system monitors irregular behavior by both examinees and exam invigilators in real time. Actions such as starting early, turning one’s head, passing items, or leaving mid-exam will be flagged and recorded.
