Two high schools in Houston were temporarily locked down Wednesday after students were found in possession of knives, with one of the incidents resulting in a stabbing.
A 16-year-old boy was stabbed during a fight at Sterling High School on the southeast side of the city, according to Houston ISD police chief Shamara Garner, who said the student sustained two wounds to the left side of his body. He was conscious when he was transported to a hospital with what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, Garner said.
The 17-year-old boy suspected of stabbing his fellow student was detained, according to Houston ISD, which said the altercation occurred at about 10 a.m. The lockdown had been lifted by about 12:30 p.m. and school day resumed as planned, although Sterling was allowing students to be picked up early by their parents.
“This was an isolated incident,” Garner said. “It’s very unfortunate anytime something like this happens. Again, we are grateful we had an officer on scene that was readily able to assess the situation and help get it under control.”

At Elsik High School, an Alief ISD campus in southwest Houston, a male student was found in possession of a kitchen knife Wednesday morning. There were no related injuries, according to the district, which said in a statement that the student had been detained and the knife was confiscated.
Elsik was placed on lockdown immediately after the incident but resumed normal operations in the afternoon.
“Please know, we always take these situations seriously and investigate them fully,” Alief ISD said in its statement. “There is nothing more important to us than the safety of our students and staff.”
