Behind northern Kentucky’s rich racing culture

FLORENCE, Ky. — Northern Kentucky has made its mark on the horse racing community. Much of the region’s racing culture stems from Latonia Race Track, which opened in 1883 and once rivaled the Kentucky Derby.

What You Need To Know

  • Latonia Race Track opened in 1883, drawing in massive crowds and even rivaling the Kentucky Derby
  • After Latonia closed in the 1930s, Turfway Park opened in 1959 as Latonia Race Course; it was renamed in 1986
  • The track hosts the Jeff Ruby Steaks, which is a qualifying race for the Derby
  • This year’s Jeff Ruby Steaks winner, Final Gambit, is set to compete in Kentucky Derby 151

“Latonia was a very well-known racetrack,” said Jason French, Behringer-Crawford Museum curator. “At times, it was more popular and drawing more of a crowd than even Churchill.”

Many famous jockeys got their start at Latonia, including Isaac Murphy, one of the first well known African American riders.

When Latonia closed its doors in the 1930s, the spirit of racing didn’t disappear in the region. It found a new home in Turfway Park in 1959. The track was originally named Latonia Race Course before being renamed Turfway Park in 1986, becoming a major stop on the road to the Kentucky Derby.

One race in particular, the Jeff Ruby Steaks, has become a key event leading up to the Derby. Named after the famous business executive and restaurateur, the Jeff Ruby Steaks brings rich culture, fun and keeps history alive.

“It doesn’t matter where you are on the map; Kentuckians are Kentuckians,” said Chip Bach the Turfway Park Racing and Gaming general manager. “They know bourbon. They know horse racing. And they understand the game of horse racing and take a lot of pride in it.”

For Ruby, the event is more than just horse racing. It’s about creating an experience that brings the community together.

“They love the event,” Ruby said. “They love the whole atmosphere, the ambiance, the food, the races. Everyone’s happy, and that makes me happy because that’s the business I’m in.”

As the Derby quickly approaches, Turfway Park remains a reminder of northern Kentucky’s horse racing history.

This year’s Jeff Ruby Steaks winner, Final Gambit, will compete in the Kentucky Derby 151 on Saturday, May 3.
