GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Candidate Brittany Kinser held a brief press call on Friday.
Kinser was responding to what she claims are false attack ads put out by incumbent Dr. Jill Underly.
It concerns an incident in 2022 where a child was assaulted at the hands of a teacher at a charter school in Milwaukee.
“The question you all should be asking right now is where was Superintendent Underly when all of this was happening. Where was Jill Underly’s statement condemning what happened and offering DPI support to find out what went wrong,” said Kinser.
Kinser says she was no longer working at the school at the time of the incident and had left to become CEO at a local non-profit.
A spokesperson from Underly for Wisconsin released a statement on the issue, saying, “We never claimed Kinser personally hired the individual in question. What we are holding her accountable for is the for-profit charter school model she led and expanded across Milwaukee – a model that relied on hiring unlicensed, unvetted staff, and cutting corners on oversight.”
