Fun and educational summer camps offered at UAB

Parents looking for education and fun opportunities for their students over summer break can find several options in various departments at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Ada Long creative writing workshop

This rewarding day camp will be open to 30 high school students interested in creative writing. With the guidance of nationally recognized authors, students will draft, edit and publish their work. They will gather inspiration from Birmingham’s rich history and culture via field trips and activities. Lunch is provided each day. Optional college credit is offered. Students with financial need are offered scholarships so they can attend for what they can afford.

The camp will be from June 9-27, and sessions will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily. To learn more and apply, click here.

CampBIZ

UAB’s Collat CampBIZ is an exciting weeklong, business-focused summer day camp held in the Collat School of Business for Birmingham-area high school students. Campers participate in interactive, fun workshops designed to engage and educate them in a safe learning environment. They will meet new friends while receiving an introduction to business as a career. Lunch is provided each day, and every camper receives commemorative gifts. The camp will be June 9-13 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and the cost is free to attend.

CORD camps

The UAB Center for OutReach Development offers hands-on science summer learning experiences for students entering 5th-12th grades. Each offering is grade-specific and focuses on areas that the student will be learning in the following school year.

Camps will begin June 9 and end July 18. Middle school camps will be held daily from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and the high school camps will take place from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. A full description and applications of the experiences can be found on the CORD website.

Farm to Fork

UAB St. Vincent’s One Nineteen is hosting a camp that will allow kids to experience the life of a farmer who enjoys freshly made meals from the backyard. Students will learn to savor the flavor of fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables and how to make a well-rounded meal with seasonal ingredients. Students ages 6-9 years will meet July 7-11, and ages 10-12 will meet July 14-18.

Symphonic band camp

Rising 7th-12th grade students are invited to come June 8-14 for a week of fantastic music- making. Opportunities include a full band experience, small ensemble participation, and training in marching band leadership, music theory, literature, conducting, music technology and jazz improvisation.

Teen cooking camp

A more advanced class at UAB St. Vincent’s One Nineteen for experienced young chefs, teen cooking camp will help teens learn to menu plan, grocery shop and enhance cooking skills to prepare them for a lifetime of culinary adventures. Camp is for students ages 13-18 from June 9-13.

 Passport to the world

Little chefs at UAB St. Vincent’s One Nineteen will be cooking delicious food from five continents. From breakfast in Africa to snacks in India and dinner in Australia, the world is at the tip of their taste buds. There will even be room for a sweet bite from Brazil and pasta from Italy. Chefs ages 6-9 will cook June 16-20, and 10- to 12-year-olds will meet June 23-27.

 Pre-law camp

The Journey to Attorney Summer Camp, run by the UAB Pre-Law program, is for rising high

school juniors and seniors interested in a professional career that includes exploring attending

law school or a career in law.

During July 13-19, students will be learning, perfecting and performing trial skills through a reimagining of the Scottsboro Nine case. At the end of the week, students will be able to present a full mock trial of the case in a real courtroom in front of friends and family.

Housing and dining are included in the camp cost. Applications will close June 13. 

URec camps

UAB University Recreation summer camps offer fun and active experiences for kids packed with adventure sports, creative crafts, aquatic activities and more. Camps are open to children ages 5-12, and run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., May 26-Aug. 5, with select weeks off.
