West Georgia Technical College Announces 2025 Adult Education Teacher of the Year

West Georgia Technical College announced that Willie Walker has been selected as the 2025 Adult Education Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Walker will represent West Georgia Technical College at the Dinah Culbreath Wayne Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education Leadership Institute March 3-5, 2025.

The Adult Education Outstanding Teacher of the Year program is designed to recognize and honor outstanding Adult Education teachers who make significant contributions to the field through instruction, innovation and leadership. These outstanding teachers participate in school and community activities, understand the importance of and are committed to the Adult Education profession and exemplify excellence. The Outstanding Teacher of the Year has a deep commitment to the mission of the Office of Adult Education.

Walker has been in education for more than 10 years and, for the past two years, has served as an Adult Education instructor at WGTC, teaching math and science. Walker structures his lessons on hands-on learning by using real-world situations to help students relate and understand complex problems, including developing and teaching students in math boot camps.

Walker was also a key figure in relaunching the Adult Education correctional program in Carrollton, which had previously been shut down in 2020. The program guides inmates in earning their GED.

“Willie Walker’s passion for teaching and his genuine care for his students’ success is what sets him apart,” said Rebecca Wheeler, Dean of Adult Education. “He has an incredible ability to meet students where they are and help them achieve their full potential. His impact on our adult learners, particularly those in underserved communities, is both profound and lasting.”

Cassandra Stigliano Named West Georgia Technical College’s 2025 EAGLE Winner

West Georgia Technical College is excited to announce that Cassandra Stigliano was named the 2025 Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education winner. Stigliano will represent WGTC at the Dinah Culbreath Wayne EAGLE Leadership Institute in Atlanta on March 3-5, 2025.

The Technical College System of Georgia, through its Office of Adult Education, sponsors the annual Dinah Culbreath Wayne Exceptional Adult in Georgia in Literacy Education Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute recognizes and honors those students who have demonstrated superior achievement in Adult Education classes and programs.

Stigliano started high school equivalency classes to benefit from the program’s in-class support, resources and sense of community while striving to build a better future for herself and her son. Balancing long hours, extra classes and online practice, she persevered and successfully earned her GED. Her dedication and determination paved the way for her to enroll at WGTC, where she is now pursuing a degree in Registered Nursing.

“Cassandra has always been determined to overcome difficulties and work hard in class,” said nominating instructor Amy Carlson. “She has overcome major obstacles to achieve her goals with determination and perseverance.”

EAGLE is the first statewide program in the nation that recognizes and rewards excellence among students enrolled in adult education programs. This student recognition program is designed to create greater awareness of educational opportunities that are available in local communities across the state and to foster greater involvement in lifelong learning pursuits.

Stigliano hopes to use her role as an EAGLE ambassador to show others what they’re capable of by encouraging them to earn their high school equivalency. She also wants to connect with employers to help them see the value of hiring high school equivalency graduates and supporting their career growth.
