VICTORVILLE, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A pair of Victor Valley Union High School District facilities bond measures are on their way to passing by wide margins, according to the latest unofficial election results.
Measure A has garnered more than 66 percent of the vote, while Measure X has received more than 67 percent approval, according to the latest update from the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters on Friday. The unofficial results indicate the measures will easily earn more than the 55 percent needed for passage, with nearly 35 percent of votes counted and 100 percent of precincts reporting.
The measures will provide up to $360 million in funding for facility upgrades and expansion.
“We’d like to express our gratitude to local voters for turning out and making their voices heard,” VVUHSD Superintendent Carl Coles said. “After surveying the community on its priorities for our schools, the Board of Trustees chose to move forward with these two measures to upgrade aging facilities and to accommodate the area’s rapid growth. The community’s response has been overwhelming, and we are looking forward to engaging them in the next step of this process. The proposal of these bonds is a promise to our community — a promise that the district will keep.”
Measures A and X are Proposition 39 general obligation bonds, which can only be used for facilities (not personnel). The spending is subject to regular audits, and a community bond oversight committee will be appointed by the Board of Trustees.
Once all votes are counted and the election is certified, the district can begin the process of appointing the committee and determining the priorities for spending the funds. Priorities include modernizing and repairing VVUHSD’s campuses, which range in age from 10 to 72 years, in addition to classroom expansion to address overcrowding.
“These measures are an investment in strong and safe schools, and ultimately an investment in the future of our community,” Coles said. “A healthy and safe learning environment is key to helping our students reach their full potential and live a life of purpose.”
