WESTBY, Wis. (WKBT) — Westby’s annual Syttende Mai festival celebrates Norwegian culture and heritage.
News 8 Now This Morning’s Alexandra Carter and Art Jarrett were joined by three members of this year’s Syttende Mai royalty – Kristal Levendoski, Alea Meinking, and Faye Hoff – to discuss the upcoming festival and how to get involved.
The festival is a three-day celebration that according to the Westby Syttende Mai website, has strong ties to the region.
“Strong ties to Norway still exists since the first official Norwegian settler laid his eyes on the prairie once called Coon. Family and tradition hold special meaning in our primarily Norwegian community.”
In celebration, there will also be a medallion hunt. There will be 17 medallions hidden in Westby, all on public property and within city limits. There is a $10 prize for 16 of the medallions and a $25 prize for the grand prize medallion.
The festival kicks off on Friday, and events will run through Sunday.
Some of the events include:
Uff-da Market: Saturday, 9 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Field.
Pickleball Tournament: Saturday, 9 a.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Field.
Snowflake Golf Tournament: Saturday, 10 a.m. at Snowflake Ski and Golf Club.
Rommegrot Eating Contest: Saturday, 2:30 p.m. at Felleskap Square.
