The 2024 CSUN Women’s Soccer team featured four seniors who wrapped up their collegiate careers in 2024. Each senior has been an important part of the program during their time at CSUN with each contributing to the Matadors’ success this past season.
The CSUN senior class consisted of Ashly Torres, Angelica Claiborne, Brooklin Woolf and Kaylee Gutierrez. All four student-athletes served as starters this season, helping guide their teammates and leading the program into the future. The class has created memories that will last a lifetime.
Ashly Torres
Torres has dedicated herself the past four years to the CSUN women’s soccer team. She is from Simi Valley and has played at midfielder and defender. Torres played in 76 games throughout her soccer career at CSUN, recording seven points, five assists, and one goal. Over her career, Torres has been recognized for her hard work on and off the field. She was named to the All-Big West Freshman Team and picked up several academic awards including the Big West Fall All-Academic Team and the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team each twice.
When looking back at her time at CSUN, Torres feels her biggest highlight was definitely this season.
“I definitely have seen us grow as a team,” said Torres. “It’s just really exciting that we can lay the foundation for the future generation with the new coaching staff. I think it’s really exciting because obviously we’ve had a couple years of struggling, but now we are on the come up, so I think that is going to be good for the program.”
When asked what her favorite memory while wearing a Matador uniform, she chose her team’s two conference wins on the road this season.
“This season we had two away games that we won at Bakersfield and Long Beach State,” said Torres. “Those bus rides home, we sang the whole way home and Bakersfield is an hour and a half away. It was very fun, everyone was involved and it was great.”
Another memory she will take with her was the support she received every game from her family. Andy Torres, Ashly’s father, spent four years on the CSUN Men’s Soccer team from 1985-89, and has been a hero to the Matador senior. Her father made an effort to be at every single one of her games at CSUN including a day trip to UC Davis to see her last game.
What’s Next?
A double major in Business Administration Marketing and Management, Torres plans to finish her studies in Spring 2025 and hopes to pursue sports marketing for a career or maybe play overseas.
Angelica Claiborne
Claiborne has spent the past four years on the CSUN Women’s Soccer team, serving as team captain this past season. Originally from San Diego, Claiborne played on defense with CSUN and appeared in 75 total games in her soccer career. A consistent presence on the field, Claiborne played 90 minutes in 18 of 19 games, totaling 5,637 minutes.
Claiborne’s tenacity on defense and leadership on the field was rewarded with her first career All-Big West honor this season as she collected an Honorable Mention.
Her highlight at CSUN has been “the improvement and development throughout the whole entire season and staying locked in for every game.”
Her favorite memory on the team has been the travel trips and having a good time with her teammates. As a senior, Claiborne had the opportunity to play alongside her younger sister, Keilani, who was a freshman this season, as the tandem made one start together.
“I will miss the coaches, teammates and playing with my younger sister the most,” said Claiborne.
What’s Next?
A Kinesiology major with an emphasis in Sports Studies, Claiborne plans to play professional soccer overseas after CSUN.
Brooklin Woolf
Woolf has been on the CSUN Women’s Soccer team since 2022. She was a transfer student from Fresno State where she attended from 2020 to 2021. Woolf grew up in Clovis and played at midfielder during her college career. She has appeared in 30 games throughout her time at CSUN from 2022-24. Last year, Woolf was honored as a member of the Big West Fall All-Academic Team. She was among the 11 student-athletes earning recognition from the CSUN Women’s Soccer team.
Along with her teammates, Woolf feels the improvement the team has made as been one of her most memorable highlights while at CSUN.
“The improvement of the program of the season has been really exciting and it makes me happy to know that we are ending off on a positive note with positive momentum and I hope that carries on to the future programs,” said Woolf.
Woolf will miss the positive atmosphere from her soccer team and being able to hangout with her teammates on and off the field. Her greatest accomplishment has been pursuing her degree in kinesiology while also studying to earn a Master’s in Business Administration because of soccer.
What’s Next?
Woolf wants to pursue a job in sports marketing or in sports event coordination for a professional team.
Kaylee Gutierrez
She has been part of the CSUN women’s soccer team since 2023. Gutierrez was a transfer student from Mt. San Antonio College where she played for two seasons before playing her final two collegiate seasons at CSUN. She is originally from Norwalk and played at forward. While at CSUN, Gutierrez played in 37 games and totaled one goal, one assist, three points and 13 total shots as she started 27 matches.
Over the past two seasons, Gutierrez has enjoyed the road trips with her teammates and the time she shared as a group the most.
“My favorite memories with the team would be our trip up to Seattle, it was my first ever out of state trip with the team and I loved every second of it,” said Gutierrez. “For this year, a great memory was all of the team bonding we did, the beach, bowling and the pumpkin patch and pumpkin carving.”
As she looks back at her time at CSUN, Gutierrez said she will miss her teammates the most.
“I will miss being around the girls constantly, it was nice having such close friends in such a short amount of time,” said Gutierrez.
What’s Next?
An Economics major, Gutierrez plans to use her degree to pursue a position as a data analyst and become a future coach.
