University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Rodney Bennett announced his decision to resign in a letter to students, faculty and staff Monday.Bennett said his last day as chancellor will be Jan. 12. Ankerson served as UNL’s executive vice chancellor from 2022 to 2024, when she retired.In his letter, Bennett celebrated what the university was able to accomplish during his tenure, including stabilizing enrollment, increasing the number of new freshmen, setting new records for first-year student retention and six-year graduation rates, developing a plan for financial sustainability, and more.Bennett also thanked faculty, staff, alumni, donors, the executive leadership team and system leadership, as well as the students.”I want to express my appreciation to our outstanding students, for all that you bring not only to the university, but also to the city of Lincoln and the state of Nebraska. Your energy, your enthusiasm, your optimism, and your determination to do your part to make our communities, our state, and our world better are an inspiration to us all, and it has been my highest honor and privilege to have served as your Chancellor,” Bennett wrote.In December, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents voted to eliminate four academic departments despite hours of public comment against the proposal. Before that decision, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Faculty Senate voted in favor of ousting the current chancellor. In November, the Senate faculty voted 60-14 for a vote of no-confidence for Bennett. Bennett was approved as UNL’s 21st chancellor in June 2023.
