Maine (WABI/WMTW) – Classes at several Maine schools were delayed or canceled Monday due to threats.
George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill says the school was evacuated due to a threat.
School officials say when staff returned to school Monday morning, they received a voicemail that contained an imminent threat.
Evacuation protocols were activated and students were asked to stay home.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said following an investigation, it was determined that the call was consistent with a nationwide hoax involving computer‑generated messages.
There is no threat to publlc safety.
Officials in MSAD 75 say all schools in the Topsham district are closed Monday after threats were made toward multiple schools.
In a message to the school community, the school superintendent did not disclose the nature of the threats but said there is a “significant possibility” that they are a “hoax intended to cause disruption.”
“While many such threats are often determined to be hoaxes, the volume and scope of these messages across multiple buildings have created an environment of insecurity and potential chaos,” wrote School Superintendent Heidi O’Leary. “We must treat all threats as credible until law enforcement can fully confirm otherwise.”
The schools are closing so officials can make sure the campuses are secure and law enforcement has enough time to thoroughly investigate.
All extracurricular activities and school-based events in MSAD 75 are also canceled for Monday.
MSAD 75 includes Mount Ararat High School, Mount Ararat Middle School, Bowdoin Central School, Bowdoinham Community School, Harpswell Community School, Williams-Cone Elementary School and Woodside Elementary School.
