BELOIT, Wis. (WMTV) – State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly kicked off Career and Technical Education Month by visiting with students and staff at Beloit Memorial High School on Wednesday.
The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development said career and technical education helps improve students’ performances in school, improves graduation rates and gives students the skills they need to succeed in life.
Dr. Underly said when students are involved in these courses, it sparks curiosity.
“A lot of times people think you go into career tech education courses, in high school you might be put on a pathway just right into work,” said Dr. Underly. “That’s not always the case. A lot of kids, you know, as we’re finding out, I mean, they’re incredibly well-rounded, and there, you know, exploring two-year colleges, four-year colleges, as well as work.“
The youth apprenticeship program reached a record high during the last school year with more than 11,000 students enrolled.
