Springfield Federation of Teaching Professionals certified as independent union
SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Federation of Teaching Professionals (SFTP), formerly known as the Springfield Local Association of Classroom Teachers, officially has been certified as an independent union by the State Employment Relations Board (SERB). As of Oct. 16, the Ohio Education Association is no longer the collective bargaining representative for Springfield Local Schools educators, according to SFTP officials.
After years of discussion and collaboration, 100% of Springfield’s teachers voted to become an independent union, allowing them to choose their own representation and focus on the unique needs of their schools, educators and students, according to SFTP officials.
“Our educators are 100% unified, strong and committed to creating the absolute best possible learning conditions for students,” said Tina Hartong, president of SFTP. “This decision wasn’t made lightly; it’s the result of thoughtful reflection and a shared vision for a union that is stronger, responsive, local and centered on what’s best for our classrooms.”
SFTP’s independence allows Springfield educators to make decisions at the local level, ensuring that every choice made reflects the priorities of those who work directly with Springfield students each day, according to SFTP officials.
“Our teachers are deeply invested in this community,” added Tricia Williams, vice president of SFTP. “By becoming independent, we’ve strengthened our ability to advocate for Springfield students and build a positive partnership with our district and community.”
