GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – The Mesa County Public Health Department issued a food safety alert Tuesday morning.
The department stated in the alert that cucumbers potentially contaminated by salmonella are present in tzatziki sauce in Gyro Sandwich Express Meal Kits, which may have been sold in Mesa County. The kits were distributed nationally at Sam’s Club stores.
The department recommends that Mesa County residents should check their fridges and immediately toss any recalled items that they find.
Here’s how the health department described the recalled product:
- Beef & Lamb Gyro Sandwich Express Meal Kits labeled with UPC: 0-13454-38313-1.
- Use by date: 12/24/2024 – 1/6/2025
- Purchased at a Sam’s Club anywhere in the United States.
The health department described salmonella as a bacteria that can cause symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Symptoms typically begin six hours to six days after infection, and can last anywhere from four days to a week.
Most people recover from salmonella infections on their own, according to the health department, but contracting an infection can lead to serious and occasionally deadly infections in young children, elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems.
Potentially salmonella-contaminated cucumbers have been a concern in Colorado since the end of November, with seven infections cropping up since the outbreak began. The outbreak has impacted food in over half the states in the US.
