On January 26, the rhythmic beats of festive drums marked the beginning of Main Line Chinese Culture Center (MLCCC)’s grand Chinese New Year celebration at Great Valley High School (GVHS) in Malvern. Students, teachers, family, and friends gathered to welcome the arrival of the Lunar Year of the Snake.
The event featured a delightful combination of delicious food, fun games, and a spectacular cultural performance. Students showcased their achievements from a year of Chinese language learning, performing well-known Chinese songs, poetry recitations, and traditional comedic dialogues. A captivating blend of melodic singing and elegant Chinese dance created a mesmerizing audiovisual experience for the audience.
Around 3 p.m., the performances concluded with an exciting raffle draw, followed by a lively cultural fair brimming with festive traditions. Children eagerly collected red envelopes from the older generation, indulged in sweet cotton candy and authentic Chinese snacks, and filled the venue with laughter and joy.
The festive atmosphere was elevated by the presence of Dr. Goffredo, Superintendent of the Great Valley School District, who honored Ms. Catherine Tang, a GV math teacher and former MLCCC Parent Teacher Organization member, for leading the successful effort to add the Lunar New Year onto the GV School District calendar.
Additionally, Ms. Stephanie Sun, an advocate in our community and Advisor in the Office of Health Equity at the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Vice President of the League of Women Voters Pennsylvania, recognized Mr. Thomas Le, a former MLCCC Board member and teacher, for his role in Radnor Township’s Calendar Committee that helped place the Lunar New Year onto the Radnor Township School District calendar.
This joyous celebration not only immersed MLCCC’s children in rich Chinese cultural traditions but also allowed every attendee to experience the warmth and unity of the Lunar New Year. We look forward to gathering again next year for another unforgettable celebration!
