IT IS 6:00, AND WE’RE GLAD YOU’RE WITH US ON MATT BARCARO. I’M CAITLIN SMITH. LET’S SHOW YOU WHAT OUR REPORTERS ARE FOLLOWING FOR. YOU THIS MORNING. NEWS EIGHT’S JACK REYES IS LIVE. WHERE A WORK ON A BIG AMTRAK PROJECT FROM HARRISBURG TO LANCASTER THAT IS NOW DONE. AND NEWS EIGHT’S GABRIELLE THOMAS ALSO LIVE IN THE CAPITAL CITY, SHOWING US A NEW APARTMENT BUILDING FOR THOSE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS. NEWS EIGHT’S J. SCOTT SMITH IS IN LOWER PAXTON TOWNSHIP AHEAD OF A TOYS FOR TOTS SHOPPING SPREE, AND WE START THIS MORNING WITH A LIVE LOOK OVER LANCASTER, A CHILLY START, BUT THE WARM UP IS UNDERWAY TODAY. YEAH, GO TO CHRISTINE TO TALK ABOUT THIS. ALL RIGHT. GOOD MORNING. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT HIGHS IN THE 60S TODAY. TOMORROW WEDNESDAY. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN WE DROP TO THE 40S AS WE HIT THE END OF THE WEEK WITH BREEZIER CONDITIONS. RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE WEDNESDAY NIGHT. THAT IS YOUR BEST CHANCE OF RAIN FOR THE WEEK AHEAD. HERE’S OUR STORM TEAM LIVE RADAR NETWORK. THERE IS A BOUNDARY UP TO OUR NORTH. WE STAY ON THE WARM SIDE OF THINGS TODAY. TEMPERATURES RIGHT NOW. NOT THAT BAD. IT’S COOL, BUT NOT TERRIBLY COLD. 42 IN LANCASTER WITH CALM WINDS, 44 IN CARLISLE. AND WE HAVE 39 DEGREES IN YORK. 12 OUR FORECAST TODAY WE GET TO A HIGH OF 64 DEGREES. THAT IS ABOVE AVERAGE BY OVER TEN DEGREES. SO WE’LL TAKE IT TO START THIS WORKWEEK. IT LOOKS LIKE A NICE ONE. JUST A LITTLE BREEZY AS WE HEAD THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. REGINA SO NICE MONDAY. SO MAYBE IF YOU WEREN’T ABLE TO FINISH CHRISTMAS DECORATING OVER THE WEEKEND, TODAY WOULD BE A GOOD DAY. NICE AND MILD. PERFECT OUT THERE. ALL RIGHT CHRISTINE, THANK YOU AND GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY. IT IS MONDAY 601. HOPEFULLY YOU HAD A NICE WEEKEND AND YOU’RE READY TO START YOUR WORKWEEK AHEAD RIGHT NOW WE DO HAVE ONE CRASH THERE IN LANCASTER COUNTY. WE’LL GET TO THAT IN JUST A MINUTE. BUT WANTED TO SHOW YOU SOME SPEEDS. IF YOU ARE TRAVELING OUT OF LANCASTER COUNTY THIS MORNING, IF YOU’RE DRIVING EASTBOUND, 283 68MPH, THERE 30 EASTBOUND, 67 AND A 45 MILE PER HOUR DRIVE. IF YOU’RE HEADING NORTH ON 222 PENNDOT CAMERA OVER YOUR COUNTY. LOOKING GOOD. NOT TOO MANY CARS AT THIS HOUR THERE ON INTERSTATE 83, WHICH IS NEW FOR US ON THIS ON THIS MORNING IN YORK COUNTY. BUT WE’LL CHECK BACK IN JUST A LITTLE BIT. 30 EASTBOUND, ALL IN THE GREEN YORK TO LANCASTER, 22 MINUTES. WE’LL HAVE ANOTHER CHECK FOR YOU IN ABOUT SEVEN MINUTES. WELL, RIGHT NOW, ABOUT 40 PEOPLE ARE OUT OF THEIR HOMES AFTER A FIRE AT THE NEWPORT COMMONS APARTMENT COMPLEX. THAT’S ON CREEKSIDE LANE IN WARWICK TOWNSHIP IN LANCASTER COUNTY. FIRE CREWS SAY THE FIRE STARTED THERE AROUND 430 YESTERDAY MORNING. IT WAS IN THE UPPER FLOORS OF THAT BUILDING AND THEN DID SPREAD TO THE ATTIC. YOU CAN SEE THE DAMAGE HERE. NORTHERN LANCASTER COUNTY REGIONAL POLICE DO BELIEVE THAT ALL THE RESIDENTS ARE ACCOUNTED FOR. THE WARWICK FIRE COMMISSIONER SAYS. AND YOU CAN SEE IT, THE BUILDING IS A COMPLETE LOSS, A TOTAL OF FIVE HAVE BEEN TRANSPORTED JUST FOR PRECAUTIONARY PRECAUTIONARY INJURIES. THE FORTUNATE PART IS THIS BUILDING HAS A FIRE ALARM SYSTEM THAT THEY CAN ACTIVATE, YOU KNOW, TO WARN THE RESIDENTS AND IT’S ALSO SPRINKLERED. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SPRINKLERS ARE NOT IN THE ATTIC SPACE WHERE THE FIRE GOT UP TO AND SPREAD QUICKLY. THE RED CROSS IS NOW HELPING 22 PEOPLE. THE STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS STILL INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE. EIGHT PEOPLE WERE SENT TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER A FIRE AT A HOUSE IN LANGHORNE. THAT’S ABOUT 25 MILES NORTH OF PHILADELPHIA. FIRE CREWS SAY THE THREE ALARM FIRE STARTED AT A DUPLEX AROUND FIVE YESTERDAY MORNING. AT LEAST TWO OF THOSE PEOPLE WERE SERIOUSLY HURT IN LANCASTER COUNTY. CLASSES ARE CANCELED TODAY AT LANCASTER COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL. THE TOP TWO ADMINISTRATORS OF THE SCHOOL HAVE STEPPED DOWN AFTER AN INVESTIGATION INTO AI GENERATED NUDE PHOTOS OF FEMALE STUDENTS. THE HEAD OF SCHOOL, MATT MICCICHE, AND THE HEAD OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, ANGELA ALHADEFF, BOTH STEPPED DOWN FROM THEIR POSITIONS ON FRIDAY. A STATEMENT FROM THE SCHOOL SAYS, IN PART, QUOTE, THE BOARD IS UNIFIED AND DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME. ADDITIONALLY, OUR FACULTY AND STAFF ARE WORKING TO ENSURE THAT DAY TO DAY LEARNING FOR YOUR CHILDREN CONTINUES AND REMAINS FOCUSED ON THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE. ACCORDING TO THE STATEMENT, CLASSES WILL RESUME TOMORROW. HAPPENING TODAY, AMTRAK IS CELEBRATING THE COMPLETION OF ITS HARRISBURG LANCASTER RENEWAL PROJECT. CONSTRUCTION CAUSED DISRUPTIONS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, SO I’M SURE COMMUTERS ARE HAPPY ABOUT THIS. ONE OF THOSE COMMUTERS TODAY IS NEWS EIGHT’S JAKE REYES, BECAUSE HE IS LIVE ON THE TRAIN RIGHT NOW TO LET US KNOW HOW THE IMPROVEMENTS FEEL. JAKE. HEY, MATT AND KAYLA. GOOD MORNING. WELL, I’LL TELL YOU WHAT WE JUST STOPPED IN MIDDLETOWN. THE TRAIN WAS GOING ABOUT 107MPH. AND NOT TOO BAD. IT WAS PRETTY SMOOTH FOR THE ENTIRE RIDE. A LITTLE BIT BUMPY HERE AND THERE, BUT JUST YOUR STANDARD BUMPS THAT YOU’RE GOING TO GET ON ANY TRAVELING COMMUTE. AND THAT’S BECAUSE THEY HAVE REPLACED MORE THAN 40 MILES OF TRACK THAT DATE BACK TO THE 1950S. FROM THIS PROJECT. NOW, IN ADDITION TO THE TRACK, AMTRAK SWAPPED OUT MORE THAN 100,000 WOOD TIES WITH CONCRETE TIES. THE DIFFERENCE IN MATERIAL IMPROVES THE LIFESPAN BY ABOUT 35 YEARS. NOW, AS YOU MAY RECALL, ALL OF THIS WORK CAUSED THE HARRISBURG LANCASTER LINE TO HAVE SERVICE OUTAGES, WHICH IS WHY THEY STARTED A BUS ROUTE TO LANCASTER. BUT IT ADDED 45 MINUTES TO THAT COMMUTE. NOW CREWS WERE ABLE TO GET THIS PROJECT DONE EARLY, AND THAT’S WHY THE BUS ROUTE STOPPED ON NOVEMBER 7TH. NOW THE CELEBRATION TODAY WILL TAKE PLACE IN ELIZABETHTOWN AT 10:00 THIS MORNING. WE’RE GOING TO KEEP EXPERIENCING THE RIGHT HERE AS WE HEAD OUR WAY TO LANCASTER. AND I’LL LET YOU KNOW EXACTLY HOW THE REST OF THE RIDE GOES AS WE’RE ON OUR WAY AND THE TRAIN IS STARTING TO MOVE RIGHT NOW. BUT FOR NOW, I’LL SEND IT BACK TO YOU, MATT AND CAITLIN REPORTING LIVE RIGHT NOW IN MIDDLETOWN. ALL RIGHT. SAFE TRAVELS THERE. JAKE, WE’LL CHECK BACK IN WITH YOU IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES. IN FRANKLIN COUNTY, POLICE ARRESTED A WAYNESBORO MAN WHO IS FACING GUN CHARGES AND CHARGES OF TERRORISTIC THREATS. POLICE SAY 44 YEAR OLD TIMOTHY BEEKMAN JUNIOR WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AROUND NINE YESTERDAY MORNING ON HAMILTON AVENUE AFTER A STANDOFF WITH OFFICERS. AS POLICE ARRESTED HIM, THE STREETS IN THAT AREA HAD TO BE SHUT DOWN. HOMES WERE EVACUATED. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE CHARGES HE IS FACING ARE IN CONNECTION TO A FIGHT ON OCTOBER 1ST IN A PARKING LOT ON EAST MAIN STREET IN WAYNESBORO. POLICE SAY THEY HAD A WARRANT OUT FOR HIS ARREST SINCE NOVEMBER 5TH. STATE POLICE NOW SAY 28 YEAR OLD MANOR KNOLL RAY, WHO WAS FROM SHIPPENSBURG, CUMBERLAND COUNTY, DIED IN A MOTORCYCLE CRASH SATURDAY MORNING IN THE COUNTY. TROOPERS SAY THIS HAPPENED ON THE RAMP FROM INTERSTATE 81 TO ROUTE TWO. 581, IN HAMPDEN TOWNSHIP. THEY SAY RAY WAS DRIVING ON THE RAMP WHEN HE RODE INTO A SHOULDER AND HIT THE GUARDRAIL. TWO PEOPLE ARE HURT IN A CRASH ON ROUTE 30 IN LANCASTER COUNTY. DISPATCHERS SAY THIS HAPPENED AROUND 330 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WHEN A VEHICLE HIT AN EMPTY TRUCK THAT WAS BROKEN DOWN ON THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY. DISPATCH SAYS THE CRASH HAPPENED IN THE WESTBOUND LANES OF THE OVERPASS THAT TAKES ROUTE 30 OVER ROUTE 283. WELL, THIS WEEK IS HOMELESS AND HUNGER AWARENESS WEEK AND A HOUSING GROUP IN HARRISBURG IS LAUNCHING ITS FIRST AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNIT FOR YOUNG ADULTS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS. NEWS EIGHT’S GABRIELLE THOMAS IS JOINING US LIVE IN HARRISBURG WITH A LOOK AT THE NEW APARTMENTS. GOOD MORNING. GABRIELLE. GOOD MORNING, MATT AND CAITLIN. WELL, TODAY MAY JUST BE MONDAY FOR SOME, BUT FOR RESIDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN APPROVED TO LIVE IN THIS BUILDING, IT’S THE START OF SOMETHING NEW. BECAUSE TOMORROW IS MOVE IN DAY. NOW I HAVE DALI JOINING ME THIS MORNING. SHE’S WITH THRIVE HOUSING SERVICES AND EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT OTHER RESOURCES YOU GUYS OFFER IN ADDITION TO THE HOUSING. WE HAVE LIFE SKILLS CLASSES. WE DO DRIVER’S ED, WE DO COOKING CLASSES, AND WE PROVIDE THEM WITH THE STABILITY THEY NEED TO GROW AS THEY MOVE INTO THEIR APARTMENT AND ALLOWED THEM TO GAIN SKILLS. AND THIS UNIT IS FULLY FURNISHED. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT A COUCH, PILLOWS, CHAIRS, REFRIGERATOR, ALL THAT GOOD STUFF TO MAKE A HOUSE, A HOME. WHY IS THAT SO IMPORTANT FOR THE RESIDENTS? IT’S IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY COME TO US AND A LOT OF TIMES THEY HAVE NOTHING. SO YOU CAN’T MAKE AN APARTMENT A HOME WITHOUT THE FURNITURE. SO IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE PROVIDE THE THINGS THAT THEY NEED. SO THAT WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT THEY HAVE A GOOD START. WHAT A GREAT WAY TO HELP THOSE IN NEED. WELL, THE RIBBON CUTTING WILL BE THIS MORNING AT 10 A.M. REPORTING LIVE HERE IN HARRISBURG. I’M GABRIELLE THOMAS, WGAL NEWS EIGHT. ALL RIGHT. HOPEFULLY THOSE HOMES BRING THEM SOME COMFORT. THANKS, GABRIELLE. COMMITMENT 2024 COVERAGE TODAY MARKING THE START OF THE RECOUNT IN PENNSYLVANIA’S U.S. SENATE RACE BETWEEN INCUMBENT DEMOCRAT BOB CASEY AND REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER DAVE MCCORMICK. THE RECOUNT, WHICH AUTOMATICALLY HAPPENS IN ANY RACE DECIDED BY A HALF PERCENT OR LESS, HAS TO BE DONE ON DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT THAN WHAT COUNTIES USED ON ELECTION DAY. LANCASTER COUNTY’S CHAIR OF ELECTIONS HOPES TO FINISH THEIR PART OF THE RECOUNT BY WEDNESDAY. IT WILL BE SIGNIFICANT. I DON’T KNOW THE ACTUAL NUMBER, BUT IT WILL BE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT I WILL REIMBURSE OUR STAFF WILL BE INVOLVED AND WE ARE GETTING VOLUNTEERS IN. STANDS RIGHT NOW BEFORE THE RECOUNT IS SET TO START. IF WE CAN SEE IT THERE, WE’LL LET YOU KNOW. MCCORMICK IS LEADING BY JUST 0.2%. THAT’S ONLY 17,000 VOTES. THE ENTIRE STATEWIDE RECOUNT HAS TO BE FINISHED BY NEXT TUESDAY, AND THE STATE ESTIMATES THAT THIS WILL COST MORE THAN $1 MILLION. PENNSYLVANIA’S OTHER U.S. SENATOR, JOHN FETTERMAN, WEIGHED IN ON THIS RECOUNT. HE REITERATED THE IMPORTANCE OF IT, WHILE ADDING THAT NO ONE IS CLAIMING THERE WAS CHEATING IN THE ELECTION. IT’S VERY, VERY CLOSE AND I GUARANTEE YOU IF IF DAVE MCCORMICK WERE IN THE OPPOSITE SITUATION WHERE HE WAS DOWN 15 TO 17,000 VOTES, HE WOULD ABSOLUTELY WANT TO HAVE EVERY LAST VOTE COUNTED AS WELL, TOO. AND IF BOB CASEY COMES UP SHORT, I CAN ALMOST GUARANTEE YOU THAT HE’S GOING TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND AND CONCEDE. WE’LL HAV
