BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Outrage over double-digit property tax increases and a record number of school budget defeats this spring prompted the Legislature to agree to examine the state’s education system and how it’s financed.
Lawmakers earlier this year formed the Commission on the Future of Public Education in Vermont. The 13-member panel’s initial report is due next week A final report is expected next year.
In this edition of 802 News, Mark Johnson spoke with commission chair Megan Roy, a former superintendent, who outlined the group’s findings so far and discussed some possible ways to restructure the education system, including closing some schools to reduce the more than $1.8 billion cost to educate approximately 83,000 K-12 students.
