LAKE PARK, Iowa (KTIV) – Harris-Lake Park Community Schools will continue classes on Wednesday, Jan. 7, after its elementary school building experienced a boiler system failure.
In an updated press release by the school district, school leaders say students will be relocated temporarily to two locations.
Preschool, TK and Kindergarten classes will be held at the Lake Park Presbyterian Church located 1220 South Market Street.
Classes for students in 1st grade through 5th grade will be relocated to Harris-Lake Park Jr./Sr. High School, located at 905 S. Market Street. Students in 6th grade through 12th grade will remain at Harris-Lake Park Jr./Sr. High School.

“Two days ago, the boiler system at Harris-Lake Park Elementary experienced a significant malfunction, resulting in steam, water and electrical damage to various areas of the building,” said the school district.
Harris-Lake Park Community School District says after an assessment, it was determined that students will not be returning to the elementary school before the transition to the new elementary school building.
“At this time, we anticipate the new elementary school will be open within the next six to eight weeks,” said the district.
School officials say the former elementary school building is going through an environmental assessment as of now.
“Until this process is complete, no personal items may be removed from the facility,” stated the Harris Lake Community School District.
All additional information on transportation, food services, and building access for elementary school students can be found on the Harris-Lake Park CSD’s website or Facebook Page.

LAKE PARK, Iowa (KTIV) – Students in the Harris-Lake Community School District will not have school this Monday, after the elementary school experienced a boiler system failure.
According to a press release from the Harris-Lake Park Community School District, there will be no school on Monday, Jan. 5. This is for all preschool to 12th-grade students.
According to the school district’s Facebook page, high school extracurricular activities will continue as scheduled.
School officials say this is because the elementary building experienced a failure in the boiler system on Friday, Jan. 2.
“After consultation with facilities professionals and safety experts, it was determined that this failure has created safety and environmental concerns that make continued use of the building unsafe,” said the school district. “As a result, the facility can no longer be occupied by students at this time.”
School officials say plans to either continue classes in the building or create alternative plans are still being discussed. The school district also asks residents to allow the district the time to communicate when all classes will resume.
“We recognize that this news may create inconvenience and uncertainty, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding,” said the school district. “Please be assured that student and staff safety remains our highest priority, and all decisions are being made with that responsibility in mind.”
