The Gilman City R-4 Board of Education met on November 20 to address multiple agenda items, including approving insurance rates, setting candidate filing dates, and reviewing various school programs and reports.
The board approved insurance rates for the 2025 school year. The district will pay $568.67 per month for the $5,000 deductible plan, covering 100% of the cost.
Board candidate filing dates were set for the April 8 election. Filing will begin on December 10 and close on December 31.
The board reviewed and approved the Vocational Program Evaluation.
Letters of resignation were accepted from Special Education Director Melody Prescott and Part-time Custodian Cynthia Cox. Prescott’s resignation will take effect at the end of the current school year, while Cox’s resignation was effective November 18.
High School Principal Brent Mitchell shared several updates, including recognition of sophomore Tony Jennings, who provided piano entertainment at the National FFA Convention.
Mitchell reported that 17 students participated in the ACT. He also noted the Veterans Day program on November 11 was well attended, reflecting strong community engagement.
Elementary School Principal Jill Sperry provided updates on various activities. Students from third through 12th grades participated in mock elections on Election Day, learning about the election process before casting their votes.
Sperry highlighted the success of the Veterans Day program, which served approximately 40 meals to veterans and their families. Jerry Lacy served as the guest speaker, and the program received positive feedback from attendees.
Sperry announced that the school has adopted the District Continuous Improvement (DCI) framework, provided by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The initiative will bring free professional development and staff support. Surveys were administered in September to assess needs, and statewide DCI Implementation Specialist Jeff Freeland worked with the leadership team in October to review the results. The team is scheduled to meet again on November 25 to develop an improvement plan.
Elementary educators Kathleen Oram and Kim Terhune received GEC grants this quarter. Oram secured $549 for instructional materials, while Terhune was awarded $200 for a book-binding repair machine.
Bonnie Banion from the University of Missouri Extension Office will conduct nutrition classes over the next six weeks for preschool and kindergarten students.
