Whether you’re a senior filling out job applications or a first-year student deciding on a major, CU Denver’s Career Center offers many resources for students throughout their education. To learn more about the center, we talked to Mark Isenburg, associate director of Career Services, whose goal is to help students feel “comfortable and confident.” That includes providing tools to help with everything from self-discovery to preparing for an interview and more.
1. Work with a counselor to design an education that prepares you for your dream job.
It’s never too soon to use the Career Center. First-year and second-year students are encouraged to get connected with the center early on, especially if they’re unsure about their plans. Career counselors are here to help students talk through their dreams for the future and which degree path would help them get there. If students need help identifying their interests and strengths, the center offers assessments on skills, personality types, and more.
2. Get access to resources that can help you now— and throughout your career.
We know many of our students are busy juggling school, family, work, and more, which is why the Career Center recently revamped its website to offer more resources that students can use at a time that works well for them. Download handy guidebooks on resumes and cover letters, which include helpful prompts and examples.
3. Schedule an appointment to talk about anything job-related.
The Career Center has two full-time career counselors who students can meet with to talk about anything related to job prep and job searches. That includes interview practice, job fair preparation, on-campus and off-campus job searches, and more. Students are encouraged to book an appointment in Handshake and plan ahead, as the counselors’ schedules get busy during peak periods of the academic year.
4. Need help right away? Stop by the Career Center during drop-in hours.
Whether you need help with your LinkedIn profile or a job application, or are interested in learning about study abroad resources or internship opportunities, the Career Center’s drop-in hours are a convenient way to get connected quickly. Stop by the center’s office, located on the second floor of LynxConnect, Monday through Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. The Career Center also hosts several pop-up events on campus on everything from mock interviews to headshots. Check Handshake for upcoming events.
Tip: LynxConnect is located in the Tivoli Annex, which is across from the iPIE entrance. If you need help finding the office, call 303-315-4000.
5. Part of a student organization? Book time for a Career Center expert to give a presentation.
