DURHAM, N.C. – In his 17th season as head coach for the Duke men’s tennis team, Ramsey Smith secured his 300th career win with a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame on March 7.
“I am proud of all of the good players I’ve had come through this program,” Smith said. “Everything that the players put into this program is what earns these wins. They are not easy. These wins are never about me. It’s always about the players. I am just happy to get the team win tonight.”
The Blue Devils currently boast a 10-3 dual match record and a 3-0 start in ACC play.
Over his 16 seasons at the helm, Smith has led the Blue Devils to the NCAA Team Championship 13 times, winning the first-round match 10 times and advancing to the Round of 16 on seven occasions. Under his leadership, Duke has finished in the top 25 of the ITA Team National Rankings 10 times.
Smith has mentored four doubles All-Americans and five singles All-Americans, as well as two-time ACC Player of the Year Henrique Cunha. In addition, he has coached two ITA National Doubles Teams of the Year, one ITA National Rookie of the Year, three ITA Regional Senior Players of the Year, one ITA Regional Player to Watch, three ITA Regional and ACC Rookies of the Year, four ITA Regional II Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship & Leadership award winners and one national recipient, 18 All-ACC selections (36 awards) and 32 Academic All-ACC honorees (65 awards). Smith was named the 2023 ACC Coach of the Year, while also earning ITA Regional Coach of the Year accolades twice in 2010 and 2012.
