A painting by Keith VanDepol. Meet the artist at Explore the ARTS, 701 Main Street, from 11 a.m. to noon.
Meet featured artist Keith VanDePol and see how he has drawn on five decades of experience. This artist has discovered how modern tools can serve traditional practices. The smart camera has become an unexpected ally in his creative process, not as an end in itself, but as a foundation for deeper exploration. These digital captures serve as initial notes in what becomes a sustained dialog with the canvas.
The paintings emerge through a process of persistent refinement — layers of oil paint applied, adjusted and reconsidered over multiple sessions. While the initial photographic reference might suggest a direction, the true work begins in the pursuit of that elusive sense of rightness through adjustments of color relationships, composition, contrasts and surface qualities.
Though landscapes dominate VanDePol’s work, creative vitality requires ventures beyond familiar territories. A painting, unlike a mere picture, must resonate with a sense of completion that is both tangible and ineffable. This understanding has led to explorations in portraiture, abstraction and contemporary approaches with equal enthusiasm.
