LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Carpentry is one of the many career paths students can take at the LPSS Career Center.
Luke Trahan, is a Carencro student who’s found a calling in carpentry.
“So we could build different things and kind of make whatever we want,” Trahan said. “Like, whatever you want to dream, a dream you can build in here.”
Blake Richard, the carpentry shop teacher, said he encourages his students’ creativity.
“I’ll let our imagination run pretty much for whatever they want to build,” Richard said. “We’ll put a plan together. They got to put the materials together, all this stuff. They learned all of that. And then we put it together.”

Trahan said his plan of working in carpentry was an easy decision; it’s a family legacy.
“My grandparents were big into carpentry,” he said. “My uncle and everybody that is in my family have worked as carpenters. I’ve been around it a lot and I really like it, so I thought, start here and see if we can make this possible.”
Richard said the carpentry program at the Career Center offers students the best chance to succeed at the trade.
“Our program is a little more a little more in-depth than a regular school program,” Richard said. “So they’ll learn construction one on one all the way from frame in the floor, in the sheet. Out of all this, they’ll learn carpentry stuff. I mean, they’re ready to go to work after they leave here.”
