BROCTON — In October, Brocton Central School welcomed Brittany Reitz, owner of Cut Loose Salon in Lakewood, who shared her journey as a successful entrepreneur with students.
A licensed cosmetologist since 2013, Reitz spoke candidly about her path from attending the local BOCES cosmetology program in Ashville to opening her own salon nine years ago. She emphasized her passion for her craft and the importance of creating a work environment she truly enjoyed. “I wanted a comfortable space to be in every day, and I definitely wanted to be my own boss so I could pick my hours and when I could take time off,” she said.
During her visit, Reitz offered practical advice for students considering careers in cosmetology or entrepreneurship. She highlighted the value of seeking guidance from experienced business owners and having reliable support from accountants, lawyers, and insurance agents. She also recommended pursuing business knowledge through courses at institutions like JCC.
Reflecting on the challenges of running a small business, Reitz spoke openly about managing employees and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. “Working hard is great, but overworking leads to burnout. I always want to enjoy what I do for a living,” she explained.
Reitz also encouraged students interested in cosmetology, noting the growing demand for skilled stylists. “If you are self-motivated, enjoy cosmetics, socializing, and being creative, this could be a great fit for you,” she said.
She stressed that while the work is rewarding, it requires dedication, long hours, and a willingness to keep learning.
Students had the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight into the day-to-day life of a salon owner. Reitz described her current schedule as flexible, allowing her to balance her career with life as a new mother, while continuing to enjoy her work. She also highlighted the versatility of the field, including opportunities to specialize in nails, facials, waxing, microblading, and hair extensions.

Reitz concluded by emphasizing the importance of thoughtful career choices and encouraged students to pursue their passions. Her visit was part of the school’s monthly Career Speaker Series, which aims to give students insights into various career paths and post-graduation opportunities.
