Students visited with businesses and organizations Wednesday to explore their career pathways at Bay City High School’s Career Fair
At Bay City High School, the staff is focused on the students and seeing them succeed. With school counselors and open discussions of what their interests are and what they want out of life, the school is all about offering the courses and information they need to pursue their dream job and make their mark in Matagorda County. The BCHS Course/Career Fair team was in charge of putting the event together and collected a large group of vendors and dedicated individuals to encourage the students and inspire them to chase their dreams.
“The purpose was to allow the kids to shop around and see some career possibilities that exist,” School Counselor Shelly Grimes said. “We wanted them to see what is available in the area that they can consider once they leave High School.”
The school’s gymnasium was filled to the brim with passionate people eager to share about their careers and businesses to the students and provide some clarity on what truly is possible within Matagorda County.
“This is the time when students choose their courses for next school year, so we hope that they are able to choose courses that will go toward whatever career they are trying to achieve,” Grimes said.
With representatives from chemical plants, radio stations, law firms and even McDonald’s, am ong other companies, the Career Fair was proof there are bountiful possibilities in Matagorda County for the students to consider once they graduate. Door prizes were provided by the businesses and given to the students, as well as plenty of handouts and information on each career field.
The school counselors are always eager to know what the students want and push their own preferences aside when it comes to the career fair and what courses are offered. The main goal is to see every student walk out of the school doors prepared and encouraged to take ahold of their future and build a life they want, Grimes said.
“We want to know what they are interested in so we can have the right courses in place for them to take,” Grimes said. “It’s all about the students and seeing them take action in pursuing their career and hopefully staying in Matagorda County to do it.”
