FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Fresno County Superintendents are urging students and families to end off-campus school walkouts.
Several schools have staged walkouts in recent weeks in protest of ICE raids and immigration enforcement.
In a joint letter, district superintendents, including those for Fresno, Central, Clovis and surrounding communities, cited safety concerns and impact on learning.
In an effort to address student expression and safety, district leaders asked parents to take time to talk with students about the importance of being in class and to remind them of the safety risks posed by leaving campus during the school day.
The letter reminds families that while state law allows one excused absence per year for civic action, this applies when families notify schools in advance and follow standard checkout procedures.
The superintendents say student expression is supported on campus with spaces that allow students to safely and respectfully express opinions during break or lunch periods.
