MOREHEAD, Ky. — Morehead State senior guard George Marshall, Jr., scored his 1,000th career collegiate point, but it came on a tough night for the Morehead State Men’s Basketball team as the Eagles fell 82-70 at Southeast Missouri’s Show Me Center.
Marshall, who has scored 576 of his 1,002 career collegiate points at MSU, registered nine, but the Eagle defense had a tough time slowing down SEMO (14-10/9-4 OVC). The Redhawks hit 51 percent overall and 45 percent from three-point range while turning 14 Eagle mistakes into a 20-6 advantage in points off turnovers. MSU dropped its second straight game and fell to 12-12 overall and 8-5 in the league. The teams split the season series.
Morehead State shot 50 percent (27-of-54) itself but found itself trailing for all but 11 seconds the entire game. It marked the first time in the last 53 games MSU lost when its shot 50 percent or better. SEMO built as much as an 18-point second-half advantage.
Jon Carroll led the Eagles with 15 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Chase Dawson was the only other Eagle to score in double figures with 10. The Redhawks ended with a 30-25 rebounding edge.
SEMO led 55-38 after Landren Blocker’s dunk with 14:24 remaining, but MSU started the cut into its deficit and eventually trimmed in back to less than double figures. A 10-2 run had MSU within nine (57-48) but Dawson’ three-pointer on the next possession rimmed out, and MSU never was able to get to within less than nine the rest of the way. SEMO eventually pushed its lead back to as much as 18 (74-56) with 4:48 left.
BJ Ward (21) and Braxton Stacker (17) led the home team in points, both going 7-of-13 from the floor. Stacker produced a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Morehead State now travels to face UT Martin on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and starts at 4 p.m. ET.
