POINT PLEASANT — Students at Memorial Middle School in Point Pleasant got the opportunity to speak to professionals from all kinds of industries last Friday, Jan. 30, at the school’s Career Day.
Every year, the Memorial Middle School Counseling Department holds a Career Day for their eighth grade students, to educate them on the various career fields available to them, in order to help them learn what kinds of educational backgrounds are needed to reach their career goals.
Participants arrived at the gymnasium between 7:30 and 8 a.m. to set up their booths and any “tools of the trade” they wished to display. Soon after, classes of eighth grade students began filing in to complete their packets and learn about jobs.
School Counseling Secretary Karen Shoemer said that some participants, like Purple Iris Florists, have been attending the event ever since she took the reins in 2011, and others, like the NJ State Troopers, were setting up booths for the first time.
“Once our participants attend, they want to come back!” she said. “In fact, 37 out of 49 participants who attended completed our Presenter Career Day Survey, and all of them answered ‘Yes’ to our question ‘Would you be willing to join us again next year for our annual Career Day?’”
Some of the careers on display were therapy dog handler, dance instructor, maritime military service, veterinary ownership, X-ray technologist, registered nurse and freelance illustrator.
There were 49 booths in total, with at least one career represented at each table. However, some booths featured multiple careers, such as the Ocean County Library, whose booth consisted of a young adult librarian, principal library assistant and library branch manager. Other booths represented larger fields such as public works, police and marine life and conservation.
Students asked questions like “What is your career?,’” “What services do you provide?,” “What is the expected job growth rate for this career?” and “What personality is best suited for this career?”
