The winter storm in the Texas Panhandle brought extreme cold and varying amounts of snowfall over the weekend, Friday, Jan. 23, through Sunday, Jan. 25, with numerous facilities, schools and businesses closed Monday, Jan. 26.

Out of an abundance of caution due to hazardous conditions related to the recent winter storm, the following institutions have issued closures, delays or rescheduling for Tuesday, Jan. 27, announced as of 9:45 p.m. Monday:

Schools

Adrian ISD will have school as scheduled Tuesday. Buses/suburbans will run on pavement only.

Bovina ISD will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 27 due to extremely cold weather and road conditions.

Canadian ISD will be closed Tuesday due to many county roads that remain hazardous.

Childress ISD has canceled classes for Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Farwell ISD will start at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, with buses on pavement only.

Friona ISD will be on a 10 a.m. delayed start on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Grandview-Hopkins ISD will have a two-hour late start on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Lazbuddie ISD will have a 10 a.m. late start on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Nazareth ISD will have a 10 a.m. late start Tuesday, Jan. 27. The bus will run two hours late, on pavement only.

Perryton ISD will be on their regular schedule Tuesday.

Sanford-Fritch ISD will begin school at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with buses running two hours late, as neighborhood streets remain slick and are expected to refreeze overnight.

Shamrock ISD will have a 10 a.m. start on Tuesday, and buses will run in town only.

Sunray ISD will have a normal start time on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Tulia ISD will have a 10 a.m. start on Tuesday, Jan. 27, with buses running two hours later.

Turkey-Quitaque ISD will start at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27. Buses will meet students at Allsups in Turkey and Quitaque at 9:20 a.m. No other morning routes will run. All bus routes will run in the afternoon on pavement only.

Wellington ISD will start classes at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, but buses will not run.

Wheeler ISD will have a 10 a.m. start on Tuesday, Jan. 27.  Buses will run in town only.

White Deer ISD will be on a two-hour delay Tuesday, Jan. 27, and buses will run two hours later than normal.

Government

The Potter County Commissioners’ Court meeting was moved from Monday to 9 a.m. Tuesday.

City services

City of Amarillo Solid Waste services will operate on a modified schedule for the week, with Monday’s residential and commercial routes serviced Tuesday, Jan. 27. Tuesday residential routes will be serviced Wednesday, Jan. 28. Brush sites and the city landfill were set to reopen Tuesday. The Guyon Saunders Resource Center (Tyler Street Resource Center) is open for homeless sheltering until Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. For more, see the city’s winter weather website.

The City of Canyon is also operating on an alternate trash schedule this week.

What’s next in the weather forecast

The storm brought heavy snow, blowing winds and hazardous conditions to much of northern Texas, and the National Weather Service office in Amarillo said storm-total snowfall generally ranged from 4 to 9 inches across the Panhandle.

Forecasters said a rapid warming trend is underway this week, with dry weather and steadily rising temperatures expected. In Amarillo, highs are forecast to climb from near 36 degrees Monday to the upper 50s by Friday and near 60 by the weekend. Overnight lows will also rise from the single digits early in the week to near or above freezing by Sunday. No additional precipitation or wintry weather is expected through early February.
