Picked by the Yiddish students at the University of Michigan.
Burikes – beets
(Polish, Ukrainian)
Under the guidance of lecturer Elena Luchina at the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies, U-M students spend four semesters learning Yiddish while also singing folk songs, reviving nearly lost Ashkenazi dance traditions, joining Klezmer jam sessions, and even gathering on the Diag to schmooze in Yiddish with community members.
Each week, the students will pick a favorite word, funny, poetic, or just plain useful and share it with you. It’s a small way to bring their passion for Yiddishkeit into your week.
